From a love of suspense to crafting my own mysteries, my journey to becoming a crime fiction author has been anything but predictable.
I think it’s more than safe that, from the moment I could hold a pencil, I was captivated by the art of storytelling. As a kid, I spent countless hours at my makeshift desk, crafting little “books” filled with whimsical plots and adventurous characters. Not surprisingly, these early attempts were riddled with more plot holes than a slice of Swiss cheese, but they were essential stepping stones that nurtured my creative spirit and sharpened my storytelling skills.
Growing up in Brazil, my passion for literature deepened during my school years. It was at the local public library where I first encountered the works of literary giants like Agatha Christie and James Patterson. Their gripping narratives and intricate plots pulled me into the world of crime mystery, and next thing I knew, I was hooked.
After high school, I set my sights on mastering English. Without the financial means for formal language courses, I turned to online resources and self-study methods. Within two years, I was already translating English novels into Portuguese – a skill that opened doors in the literary world.
My journey into translation was a natural progression of my “linguistic pursuits”, but it wasn’t without its challenges; I had to navigate the complexities of CAT Tools (translation software, not fluffy pets) and learn how to craft narratives that resonated with readers. Despite the hurdles, I found my stride, eventually translating books for esteemed publishers like Next Chapter – a significant milestone in my journey.
As I honed my translation skills, I also began to find my own voice as a writer. Encouraged by this newfound confidence, I approached Next Chapter with a bold request: to transition from translator to author. To my surprise, they welcomed my first manuscript with open arms, marking the beginning of my career as a crime fiction author.
While I started with non-fiction, writing about historical oddities for a specialized website, my heart now lies with crime fiction. I think this genre allows me to explore the darker aspects of humanity, since I like to craft intricate plots that challenge readers’ perceptions, and create characters whose lives intertwine with mystery and suspense.
Although I still take on occasional translation projects, my primary focus now is on captivating readers with tales that provoke thought, stir emotions, and leave a lasting impact. If you’re drawn to the twists and turns of crime fiction, I invite you to join me on this literary journey. This is just the first chapter of our story together, with many more twists and turns ahead. So stay tuned, and welcome to the case!
